If you are a seller on Amazon or Flipkart, you need to apply online using the GST Portal to get the registration done. It is mandatory to get the registration done.
The GSTIN should be obtained before you can list or sell any products on these platforms.
What are the Documents Required?
- PAN Card
- Aadhaar card
- Bank account details
- Address proof
- Photograph
Steps to get the registration
- Visit the GST Portal
- Click on “New Registration”.
- Enter your basic details(Mobile no,email etc).
- Do the verification using the OTP you received.
- Fill in all the details about the business, address and bank.
- Upload all the required documents.
- Click on “Submit”.
Example
If I want to sell my products on Amazon, I cannot list them until I have my GST number. So I have to apply and get the GSTIN and enter it while creating my seller account.
Note
No minimum turnover exemption applies.
GST Registration Benefits for Online Business
Though it is compulsory, there are benefits in registering for GST:
It gives legal identity to your business
Builds customer trust and reputation
Enables you to take Input Tax Credit (lessens tax liability)
Helps in scaling up your business
Hence, it not only fulfills a legal compulsion but will also help you grow your business.
Mistakes to Avoid
There are a few common mistakes while filling the form which must be avoided such as:
- Entering wrong PAN/Aadhaar Number
- Upload of unclear/inaccurate documents
- Wrong bank details given
- No checking on application status
The above mistakes should be avoided in order to get GST registration quickly.
What’s Next After GST Registration?
After obtaining my GST number, I can do the following:
- Open a business account on Amazon or Flipkart
- List my items for sale
- Sell legally
However, that’s not where the process ends. I should also consider:
- Filing GST returns periodically
- Keeping accurate sales and purchase records
This means GST registration is merely the beginning.
Therefore, in general, if my objective is to sell my products through channels such as Amazon and Flipkart, it would be imperative for me to get GST registration done. This would be an online procedure, provided all the documents are prepared beforehand. This would enable me to start my business legally and successfully through online portals.
